Jason Newsted Returns to Metal Roots with New Band

Jason Newsted is back to making metal with bass in hand and this time around he’s also handling the lead vocals in his new band aptly called ‘Newsted’.

NewstedThe new EP that is dropping January 8 is simply called ‘Metal’ ensuring that there’s no mistake about the style of music Jason is creating this time around.

The first track called ‘Soldierhead’ sounds like a blend of Kill Em All era Metallica, Motorhead with a little Voi Vod thrown in for good measure.

Jason’s vocals aren’t quite as gruff as you might expect from when he was backing James Hetfield on songs like Seek and Destroy in Metallica, but I think it’s perfectly suited to the music. The lyrics also seem to be insightful and aggressive without being bleak and depressing; awesome news for those of us who like our metal with a slice of positivity!

I had the chance to sample clips of all the songs from the 4 song EP and it sounds like a winner to me. The lead single Soldierhead has been growing on me like crazy the last few day. The other songs on the release are titled…

  • Godsnake
  • King of the Underdogs
  • Skyscraper

…and they sound consistently good to me. Having said that, I’m a fan of Newsted’s…so your mileage may vary.

You can listen in to Soldierhead directly below. (Note – the official video hasn’t been released yet).

In an interesting move, Jason has decided to launch the new EP exclusively on itunes. Hopefully the move works for him as it sounds like this Newsted project will be Jason’s last kick at the can in terms of creating serious music, touring and recording for it.
